Asia is home to some of the world’s largest protein consumers, particularly the seafood as it is deeply embedded into the historical regional food culture. This is especially true in sea-locked countries such as the Philippines and Malaysia. In fact, according to Green Queen Media in 2020, more than 2/3 of the world’s available seafood supply will be consumed by Asia Pacific consumers in 2025.
As the demand continues to outgrow the existing supply in Asia, there is huge potential for plant-based alternatives to meet the supply gap. Indeed, Asian consumers are eager to include plant-based fish and seafood in their diet. That is why more than 120 companies are developing seafood alternatives according to a study from GFI APAC in 2020.
